UK Signals Alignment with EU Machinery Safety Rules After Consultation

The UK government has outlined its future direction for machinery safety regulation following a recent consultation with industry, indicating a move toward closer alignment with EU requirements.

The consultation, launched in July 2025, invited feedback on whether the UK should continue accepting EU machinery standards, including CE marking, and whether it should mirror elements of the EU’s new Machinery Regulation, which will come into force in 2027.

The response from industry was largely supportive. Most stakeholders favoured maintaining alignment, highlighting the advantages of reduced administrative burden, cost savings, and smoother access to both EU and Northern Ireland markets. For many businesses, particularly SMEs, consistency across markets is seen as essential for maintaining competitiveness.

Conversely, moving away from EU requirements was viewed as potentially disruptive. Respondents raised concerns that divergence could increase compliance costs, complicate supply chains, and limit the availability of certain products in the UK market.

There was also strong support for modernising the regulatory framework. Industry participants welcomed proposals to introduce digital solutions, such as electronic documentation and product passports, to simplify compliance and improve efficiency.

That said, some areas remain under debate. The proposed expansion of mandatory third-party conformity assessments drew mixed reactions, with concerns raised about both cost implications and the capacity of assessment bodies.

In its response, the government confirmed it will continue recognising CE-marked machinery in Great Britain and update existing legislation to incorporate similar principles to those adopted by the EU. While not identical, the UK’s approach will remain closely aligned to support trade and ensure regulations remain fit for modern technologies.
