EU’s New Batteries Regulation Enforces PCS Enrollment by 18 August

In a significant step toward a greener economy, the European Union’s updated Batteries Regulation mandates that all businesses introducing batteries into the EU market must register with an authorised Producer Compliance Scheme (PCS) by 18 August. This registration ensures producers take responsibility for end‑of‑life management under harmonised collection and recycling targets.

Under the scheme, manufacturers and importers must declare the volumes and chemistries of batteries they place on the market, along with their strategies for collection, treatment and recovery. National authorities will track these submissions to confirm that recycling objectives—set at 50% for portable units and up to 70% for automotive batteries—are achieved.

Member States have already launched online registration portals and are offering guidance sessions to aid compliance. Manufacturers who haven’t registered by the 18th August may face fines from the authorities and may no longer be able to import batteries into the EU.

Trade bodies acknowledge that smaller firms may face initial administrative hurdles but stress that long‑term benefits include clearer regulatory expectations and fairer competition across the single market.
