EU access to UK database approved

UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly and European Commission Vice President, Maroš Šefčovič met in London on January 9th 2023 to formally allow EU access to a British database. Access to the database has proved to be a stumbling block for paving a way to resolve the Northern Ireland Protocol impasse.

A joint statement also stated issued after the meeting, stated that the challenges posed by the Northern Ireland protocol over the past two years had been discussed in the meeting.

It also stated that both sides had a determination to work collaboratively and constructively to find solutions for the main goals of protecting Northern Ireland’s place in the UK internal market, the integrity of the EU Single Market and also protecting the Good Friday Agreement. The Good Friday Agreement was signed in 1998 to remove the hard border between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland.
